Nomfezeko Ella

Nomfezeko Ella was born in Meadowlands, Soweto, 25 years ago. She is currently completing her third year at Artist Proof Studio. Nomfezeko has been sponsored by pinpoint one human resources for the past three years at Artist Proof Studio. The body of work on exhibition is intensely personal and reflects her feelings towards her skin which is highly sensitive and has affected every part of her daily life. She has used unusual methods to represent her-self, printing on fur and cow-hide as metaphors for skin using the impressions made to reflect the impressions made on her skin.
“When I was very young I used to enjoy playing with other children, I was confident, outgoing and beautiful, I loved what I saw in the mirror and thought my body, face and skin was perfect.
As I grew up, strange things started to happen with my skin - I had to change my diet, stop using soaps and other products. I cannot wear certain fabrics even handling food has affected my skin. This has affected the confidence I used to have in myself - I have become shy, withdrawn and the beautiful proud child I was has gone,”
