Pro-shop artists and current projects

Our large professional workspace features some of the best state-of-the-art facilities for printmaking in the country. APS is equipped with one of the finest etching presses in South Africa, with a press bed that can print 1,2 x 2,4m plates. In addition, the professional workshop features a Tackach direct lithography press (maximum sheet size1,12 x 0,76m) as well as four etching and lithography presses, set up in the student workshop.

The printmaking workshop is fully ventilated with a fireproof acid room and solvent storage facility to maintain strict health and safety standards. Full-time technical assistance is available to professional artists.

APS aims to develop the Professional Studio into an income-generating and training development unit for the studio and its learners, who intern in this space. As part of their learnership workplace training, two second-year learners have been interning with studio printer, Timothy Foulds.

Artists programs

APS provides a home studio and printmaking facilities to all artists who have trained in the studio. Artists have the option to become members of Artist Proof Studio and access to the facilities are available at negotiable rates. To this end a number of artists have access to the facilities, materials and are able to market and sell their work through our gallery. Artists currently using our facility include Philemon Hlungwani (programme co-ordinator), Jacob Molefe, Lucas Nkgweng, Paul Molete, Flora More, Bongi Mkhize, Zollile Phetshane, Thabo Pala and others

You can find more information and biographies of the artists at artists biographies and artworks link.

CO-PUBLISHING PROJECTS BETWEEN TIM FOULDS AND Artist Proof Studio:

Bronwyn Findlay: “Lucky Beans and Lace Curtains”

This project is a collaboration between Artist Proof Studio, Tim Foulds and Bronwyn Findlay, extended over a period of one year.

Bronwyn Findlay was invited to produce one work, but the project expanded into a varied edition of prints. During their previous collaborations, Tim was introduced to Bronwyn’s paintings and became interested in producing a series of prints that would capture the rich and dense layered effect obtained from her paintings. This was realized in a current body of work, wherein various print mediums were layered to capture a similar effect to that of Bronwyn’s paintings. Bronwyn is familiar with various printmaking techniques and thus was able to use a variety of techniques to create many layers in each work.

Techniques used include: Relief Print (Marley tile), Carborandum, Monotype, Stamping, Chine Colle and Intaglio.

The different plates in a variety of mediums were moved around in a playful manner on each individual print. The result is a densely layered and richly textured series of prints. The working process allowed for a surprise element, since each print was not planned in advance. Both printer and artist responded to each individual print and the layering of different mediums and images.

OTHER ARTISTS CUURENTLY COLLABORATING WITH TIM FOULDS AND APS INCLUDE:

- Michael Chibogo Khumalo
- Paul Molete
- Dumisani Mabaso
- Richard Forbes

ARTISTS WORKING IN THE PRO SHOP

MTN Art Foundation: Sophiatown Print Portfolio

The MTN Art Foundation with Philippa Hobbs initiated this project in collaboration with APS to create a print portfolio of 8 original prints. The print portfolio will consist of prints commemorating Sophiatown by a selection of South African artists, working in different print media. The portfolio will be used by MTN as corporate gifts. This is the second portfolio of its kind initiated by MTN in collaboration with APS. The first print portfolio, initiated in 2006, was themed around Soweto and featured the work of artists from this area.

Richard Forbes:

In August 2007, Richard Forbes produced a series of varied editions that are in the process of being editioning by APS printer, Pontsho Sikhosana. Richard has been working on a series of large intaglio plates. His mark-making tools consist of spinning-tops that he sculpted out of wood. These wooden spinning tops are not only artworks, but act as interactive tools by which the artist invites his audience to spin the tops onto the plate themselves and make a mark. The outcome is a dense layering of spinning marks that looks like galaxies and constellations of infinite space. Richard’s playful and 'performative' interactions push the boundaries of printmaking as a traditional medium into a conceptual and socially interactive method. Richard’s series of prints were exhibited at the Premises Gallery in 2007. He will also exhibit the plates, which have become artworks in themselves.

Wim Botha:

APS is honored to be facilitating a series of large scale lino cuts by artist Wim Botha. Master printer Tim Foulds, alongside assistant, Motsamai Thabane, are editioning this interesting series of prints. The carved mark-making techniques are of an exceptional quality, relating back to the old master lino / woodblock cutters.

Paul Edmunds:

Printer Pontsho Sikhosana has been editioning a large lino cut work for artist and winner of the 2007 award, Paul Edmunds. The lino cut print is of vein-like cuttings in the shape of lungs. The work was exhibited at Art on Paper earlier this year.

Brett Murray:

Murray’s satirical lino cut work is being printed and editioned by Pontsho Sikhosana, assisted by Lelhogonolo Mashaba, as a diptych.

Paul Molete:

Paul trained at APS and is known for his strong lino cut works, which won him a Brett Kebble award. Paul generally digs deep into social issues. In his current series, however, he experiments with monotypes in colour, leaving his formal depictions for abstract expressionistic works. These abstract works are looking internally, so as to deal with his emotions. They carry titles such as: ”Strong Characters in Space”.

Dumisani Mabaso:

Dumisani has long been associated with printmaking and APS. He has worked as printer, mentor and artist in the studio. He is currently producing works and developing prints with printer Lelhogonolo Mashaba.

Various artists:

The Pro shop has a variety of established and upcoming artists with ongoing projects who pop in from time to time to work on plates, or to drop off works for proofing or for future editions. We are happy to consider collaborations and projects over a large and varied spectrum.
